Russell Davidson
Retired Army veteran. Former criminal investigator. Thriller novelist.
I write mystery and crime thrillers built on real investigative instincts—tight pacing, hard choices, and stakes that don’t let go.
My story
From service and investigations to the page
After a career in the U.S. Army and years as a criminal investigator, I learned how small details change everything—what people say, what they avoid, and what evidence refuses to fit. That experience shaped the way I write: grounded characters, credible procedures, and twists that feel inevitable in hindsight.

What I write—and why it matters
My novels live at the intersection of mystery, psychological suspense, and crime thriller pacing. I’m drawn to cases where the truth is layered, motives are human, and the cost of getting it wrong is personal.
The Jack Stephens series begins with Richmond in Red—a hunt for a killer that turns intimate when Detective Jack Stephens’ wife becomes the next target. I write to keep you turning pages, but also to leave you thinking about what justice really asks of the people chasing it.
On craft
The promise I make to readers
A good thriller earns your trust before it breaks your heart. I start with character—what someone wants, what they fear, and what they’ll sacrifice to protect the people they love.
My background taught me to respect the work: the interviews, the paperwork, the long nights, and the moments when a single overlooked fact changes the entire case. That realism doesn’t slow the story down—it sharpens it. When the twist comes, it should feel surprising, but never random.
I write stories where the clues are honest, the danger is real, and the ending stays with you.

When I’m not writing, I’m reading across the genre, studying true cases, and collecting the kinds of details that make a fictional world feel lived-in. If you’d like updates on new releases, events, and behind-the-scenes notes, you’ll find them on the blog.
